Suspect shot by officer outside Fashion Fair Mall in Fresno, parking area closed to public

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN — On Wednesday morning, detectives opened fire outside Forever 21 Fashion Fair Mall.

According to authorities, it all began with a stolen Range Rover belonging to Qbal Singh.

He claimed that it was parked in front of his family’s house, and they saw it gone this morning.

He claims that the keys were accidentally left in his car.

“Fortunately, we have one of our phones in the car, so we tried to track the phone down and see the vehicle is moving,”He said.

The family immediately called 911 and tracked the vehicle via Find My iPhone.

Fresno Help Eliminate Auto Theft Team (or HEAT team) were also able start tracking the SUV.

They found it parked at Fashion Fair Mall. The driver and passenger were still inside.

Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers, who are part the HEAT team, began to move in to arrest them. That’s when the shots were fired.

“The vehicle, the driver took evasive actions trying to evade that arrest,”Fresno Police Lieutenant Bill Dooley. “Those evasive actions included striking other vehicles. Two of the detectives that were on scene felt threatened by these maneuvers, went ahead and shot at the driver to keep from getting injured.”

According to authorities, the driver was hit by gunfire and was immediately stopped.

Both the driver and passenger were only described as men in their 20s. They were taken into custody.

Officials state that deputies and officers began treating the suspect for the gunshot injury until the ambulance arrived.

The driver was taken to the hospital in critical conditions.

The passenger was admitted to the hospital with an unrelated medical condition.

Police say that a firearm was found in the vehicle. Investigations are ongoing.

“We are asking the public if anyone happened to be here during the shooting and captured any video, please contact the police department and share those with us,”Lt. Dooley stated.

The vehicle’s owner stated that everyone should check that their vehicle is locked and that he was grateful for the assistance of law enforcement.

“Lucky no police officers or anyone was hurt,”Singh stated. “But I heard there was a shooting there – thanks to the police department for their help.”
