Jake Paul Will Not Face Federal Charges Related to 2020 Arizona Mall Looting Incident

Jake Paul will not face federal prosecution after being identified in a clip showing the looting an Arizona building mallamid protests that began last year in response to George Floyd’s death.

“Based upon the investigation and evidence available at this time, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona is not pursuing federal charges against Jake Paul for his conduct,”In a statement to NBC News, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Arizona stated that they were investigating the incident.

According to the outlet, misdemeanor charges against the social media star aged 24 were dismissed previously.

Paul participated in protests in the United States over George Floyd’s killing in May 2020. This was after a white cop pinned Floyd to the ground in Minneapolis.

Paul captured the demonstration on his Instagram Story. He claimed that he was tear-gassed, and that his eyes were swollen. “bleeding.”

Later, he was identified in another video of looters vandalizing an P.F. Chang’s restaurant in Fashion Square mall in Scottsdale, Arizona — which prompted backlash on social media.

“To be absolutely clear, neither I nor anyone in our group was engaged in any looting or vandalism,”The YouTuber released a statement at that time, stating that he was “strictly documenting, not engaging.”

“I do not condone violence, looting, or breaking the law; however, I understand the anger and frustration that led to the destruction we witnessed and while it’s not the answer, it’s important that people see it and collectively figure out how to move forward in a healthy way,” Paul continued. “We are all doing the best we can to be helpful and raise awareness; this is not the time to attack each other, it’s time to join together and evolve.”

In August 2020, FBI agents searched Paul’s home and he had another run-in. This was when the Scottsdale Police Department announced that Paul’s charges for his involvement with the Scottsdale Fashion Square Riots were being dropped without prejudice and that the investigation was being transferred to the FBI.

“The FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office served a federal search warrant today at a Calabasas residence at around 6 a.m. and just cleared a short while ago,”PEOPLE was told at the time by a spokesperson from the FBI. “The affidavit in support of the search warrant has been sealed by a judge and I am prohibited from commenting on the nature of the investigation.”

Helicopter footage was captured over the scene by ABC7. showOfficers with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department seize multiple firearms from the property.

PEOPLE reached out to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson who stated that the department was at the time. “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s only involvement in this incident was to transport some firearms for the FBI.”
