Sometimes, it feels like I was completely unprepared when I walk to class at 7 :45 a.m. on Tuesday. My jeans and a sweatshirt don’t hold a candle to the people who got up early to walk the Commonwealth Avenue runway.
Why are Boston University students so beautiful? How can I look put together beside the College of Fine Arts fashionistas or casual Balenciaga wearers?
A few key pieces in your closet can elevate any outfit, especially during the cooler months when you can layer and wear jackets. These items are most commonly found at Goodwill, but they can elevate any outfit.

These items can be used to spice up your outfits regardless of your gender identity. I want everyone to feel confident in their clothes, regardless of their gender identity.
I love to add a leather coat to any outfit. It makes it look more stylish. I pull out my leather coat whenever it drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Whether it’s a Moto jacket or a full coat, leather jackets are an easy piece to spice up the most basic of outfits.
I usually wear mine with a tee or sweater, paired with jeans and my white sneakers.
My freshman year at BU, I have a fond memory of crossing the street to get my class. The sweetest person complimented me on my outfit. I was wearing black jeans with a long-sleeved shirt. But the leather jacket made it cool girl certified.
If you don’t want to contribute to the leather industry, Target and other popular retailers offer vegan leather options for a reasonable price. Another option is to look at vintage or thrift stores. You can take this tip one step further by wearing a colorful turtleneck. You could add color and personality to plain outfits.
To continue the theme of layering, I would suggest that you have a variety of jewelry to layer over your outfit.
Accessories are just as important — if not more — as the clothing when it comes to an outfit.
My weakest link when it comes jewelry fashion because I’m still learning how to utilize it, but it always makes me look better. Even athleisure can look great with the right jewelry.

For truly unique pieces, I recommend you check out flea markets or vintage shops like SoWa Vintage Market. However, if you don’t want to spend a lot of time or money, you can find some pre-layered sets on Etsy or Amazon.
Wear what makes you feel most confident in your own skin. It doesn’t mean you have to dress up like everyone else on campus.
Sometimes, a great outfit can make a big difference in your day and confidence. So, don’t underestimate the power of some simple additions to your wardrobe to improve your fashionYour mood.
