Dancer Camila Arroyo and Designer Sabrina Ol Visualize a Contemporary Soldadera

“Soldaderas”This is a collaboration and coproduction between fashion designer Sabrina Olivera and dancer Camila Arroyo. Sabrina recently launched her own website. fashionSabrina Ol brand with a collection that pays homage to Soldaderas (the women fighters in the Mexican Revolution of 1910). Both creatives quickly met and were inspired by one another shortly after launch. The Pandemic added urgency and urgency to their desire for creation together. As Camila recounts, “[We felt] the film could be a perfect [collaborative] medium, as fashion runways and live shows had to be re-conceptualized.”

Camila and Sabrina create a short film that shows what a modern soldadera or soldier might look like today. The duo blends three key elements: self fashioning, braids to symbolize pride and care, as well as the Spanish verb soldar. “to weld”. As Camila describes, “We dance to imagine a contemporary Soldadera. We manifest her away from the hyper-masculine and militaristic imaginary that created her, and within a tender choreography with the city that we exist in today.”
