For young creatives, unique internships are available through government programs and industry partners.
CMYUK has launched its Creatives In Resident Live (CIRL), program. This exciting initiative will give two young surface designers and one talented videographer an outstanding opportunity to undertake a six-month placement at CYMUK’s advanced digital training and demonstration facility in Shrewsbury. CMYUK is the UK’s largest independent supplier of large-format digital printers, cutting equipment, and materials.
CIRL is supported and sponsored by market-leading brands Epson. Canon. Mimaki. EFI. Klieverik.
A number industry mentors such as Adobe, Standfast and Barracks and The Pattern Room have also confirmed their participation. As the project progresses, more collaboration will be possible across the production workflow.
This initiative is open to young people registered on the UK government’s Kickstart scheme. CMYUK has seized the opportunity to create a structured and comprehensive internship program that allows for a seamless transition from education to working in the commercial world. Through practical applications and valuable insights from industry experts, the young designers will develop their creative skills. The chosen videographer will capture these ventures through a vlog? producing an engaging multi-platform, social media story for the décor, fashion, design, and print networks, adding an interactive dimension in the progressive learning experience.
Digital Textile Printing—A Watershed Moment
The digital printing capabilities and ecommerce business models are disrupting the textile industry. These lend themselves to on-demand personalization for short runs or one-off production and just-in-time processes that dispense with the need for expensive storage or the creation of surplus items that don’t sell. CIRL provides young creatives with the ability to fully absorb new trends and technologies. This gives them valuable insight, experience, as well as practical knowledge, which is extremely beneficial for their early career development.
Mentoring and Real Work Learning
A six-month-long curriculum containing monthly modules was written exclusively by an industry expert, multidisciplinary practitioner, and award-winning textile professional. designer, and WhatTheyThink contributor Debbie McKeegan. Debbie is also the founder and Textile Ambassador of FESPA, the online resource for the digital textile community Texintel.
Each module provides the knowledge and insight required for designers to complete monthly briefs. It is supported in collaboration by a host of industry experts and print designers, as well as mentors. The final showcase will take place at the end of six months. This will allow everyone to come together and celebrate the achievements of creatives in residence.

Worldwide Design Competition
The CIRL experience will be captured throughout the process and shared on social media. This will encourage a dynamic interactive community that is exposed all the learning experiences by the in-house creatives.
CIRL is intended to be a collaborative experience. All designShorts will be available online designStudents from all over the world can participate. Participants can participate in a monthly competition for each brief. The winning entries will be evaluated by industry experts and showcased throughout.
