On the night between February 28 and March 1, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel (and in many other locations) the Golden Globe 2021. A ceremony that pandemic or non-pandemic did not fail to be that which has always been (in its own way): an extremely show Sui generis. Yes because, if the Oscars have always been a sort of “huge television event”, extremely institutional, with very well-timed times and limited interventions, Golden Globes they have always enjoyed greater freedom. A freedom that manifested itself both in the conduct (entrusted to subjects of their own unpredictable nature) but also in the speeches of thanks in which the artists launched themselves after receiving the award, often full of political messages, serious or even, possibly, comical and funny. The 2021 edition, despite the pandemic and connected artists from home, was no exception. If on one hand we have already told you about all the winners of the evening, here are the best speeches (and most applauded by the network) of the Golden Globe 2021.
Daniel Kaluuya for Judas and the Black Messiah
Let’s start with a very special moment. And, in its own way, unforgettable. Awarded for Judas and the Black Messiah, the actor Daniel Kaluuya he was faced with the most classic of the problems of a zoom call: the bad connection. His speech began completely without audio. Then it continued, fortunately, after having found the “word” after a few moments of embarrassment and several “trial-proof”. A moment that, among all of them, really tells clearly what the Golden Globes were during the pandemic.
Sacha Baron Cohen for Borat – Sequence of cinema films
Sacha Baron Cohen was one of the winners of the evening awarded with two statuettes: best comedy and best leading actor. In accepting the two awards, Baron Cohen did not fail to show his caustic verve. His first speech began with “Thank you to the all-white Hollywood Foreign Press” while, accepting the second prize, Cohen said:
“Donald Trump is contesting the outcome of this victory. He said a lot of dead people voted which is a really terrible thing to say from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.”
Taylor Simone Ledward for Chadwick Boseman’s victory
It was probably the most memorable moment of the 2021 edition. In an atmosphere of enormous emotion, the Golden Globe was awarded to Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The award was received by the actor’s widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, who said, “I don’t have his words, but I think we have to take every single moment to thank the people we love. Right now I’m doing it.”
Emma Corrin for The Crown
Emma Corrin, the “revelation” actress of the series The Crown, wanted to dedicate her victory as Best Actress in a drama series to her: Lady Diana. “Thank you very much, Princess Diana. You taught me compassion and empathy in a way that exceeded all my expectations.”
Jodie Foster for The Mauritanian
“Are you kidding me?”. There is nothing to say. Jodie Foster didn’t really expect to receive the Golden Globe. Literally pervaded by irrepressible joy, he gave the speech from the living room of his house in the company of his wife.
“Are you kidding me? I think you made a mistake. I’m a little bit speechless. I never expected to be here again and … wow. And wow again.”
The actress then thanked her wife, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and her dog Ziggy.
“What a night!” he then commented.
Laura Pausini for Io Sì
Let’s finish the roundup with the Italian Laura Pausini for the victory of I do in the best song category. The artist received the award sitting on her piano and gave a speech under the banner of “thank you”. “Thank you, thank you” she repeated visibly excited, thanking Edoardo Ponti, Sophia Loren and all the people who contributed to her victory which, we can say, is truly historic.
