On the occasion of Milan Fashion Week, Etro unveils the new Fall Winter 2021 collection and, exclusively for Vogue, recruits singer-songwriter Arlissa, the star of the music performance in the show, to talk about the collection.
From Los Angeles, the British artist talks about her love of the Italian brand, and shows us some of her favorite pieces from the Fall Winter 2021 runway show.
«The thing I love the most about Etro’s style is how bohemian and eclectic it all is; it’s the way it mixes the colors, the prints and the patterns which is a celebration of joy. I love the way Veronica Etro celebrates femininity. And also, it is a sustainable brand, which is so important, given what we do to the world every single day, it’s such a beautiful thing to incorporate this consciousness into our style and fashion »says Arlissa. “I have a lot of favorite looks from this collection, there was a particular yellow trouser that I loved that had almost like a tie-dye effect that was phenomenal, I have to wear them today. I am a huge fan of Etro’s chunky belts, you can wear them with everything, so, chunky belts all the way! “
With the new Fall Winter 2021 collection, Veronica Etro references two among the greatest artists of the 20th century to redefine the meaning of freedom, embarking on a journey into a free-spirited, independent aesthetics. The story of Rudolf Nureyev and of Jimi Hendrix, both geniuses in the arts, sharing the same desire for freedom and rebellion, is examined in depth, unveiling little-known details about their style. The passion for interior design and exoticism of the celebrated classical dancer encounters Hendrix’s indie influences, with his embroidered robe coats, fringed blazers and the suit and gilet combo for the evening. The result is an eclectic wardrobe, featuring generous proportions and comfy silhouettes.
The collection’s prints were inspired by the geometric patterns of Russian ballet’s costumes, mixed with the embroidery of Nureyev’s costumes which Gimmo Etro, the brand’s founder, has been collecting for over 30 years. The wallpaper and paisley motifs, alongside the animal print patterns, call to mind the world of Jimi Hendrix.
Artisanal-feel patchwork coats are juxtaposed to the urban vibe of the quilted anoraks. Cozy knitwear pieces alternate with men’s-style ensembles, crafted from interior design textiles, while the wide wale corduroy loose trousers take on a tie-dye motif. The true feminine essence of the collection is conveyed by the tops with appliquéd bib, but also by the mini and maxi dresses, cinched at the waist with a belt embellished with a metallic intarsia buckle. The sweatshirts, the jeans, the leggings and the outerwear, all add a down-to-earth touch to the show. Etro’s nomadic spirit is echoed in the flat boots and multifunction cross-body bags.
In the Fall Winter 2021 collection, the brand’s unique sensitivity to color and the artisanal heritage of the brand encounter the relaxed and dynamic attitude of today’s free spirits.
