Fashion brands celebrate Black History Month 2021 with capsule collections and special projects.

Born in 1970, as a student movement at Kent State University, Ohio, Black History Month is today a recurrence remembered throughout the Western world, from February 1 to March 1, to celebrate the importance of people and events in the history of the African diaspora. In support of the anniversary, every year, the fashion world joins the celebration with capsule collection of special products and initiatives to support the Black community.

In this article we collect the most interesting fashion projects to celebrate Black History Month 2021.

Farfetch

On the occasion of Black History Month 2021, Farfetch announces partnership with Nataal, the global multimedia brand, a leader in celebrating contemporary fashion, beauty, visual arts, music and culture from Africa and its diaspora. In this year of partnership, Farfetch will work with Nataal and its community to create content that supports their groundbreaking talent. The first iteration of the partnership comes to life thanks to a special collaboration with Balmain and the creative director, Olivier Rousteing. Inspired by Rousteing’s Black style icons, the project expresses how the revolutionary spirit of these icons remains a lasting influence on today’s modern luxury.

New Balance

On the occasion of Black History Month 2021, New Balance unveils a special collection and a dedicated program entitled “My Story Matters”. Conceived, designed and produced by a team of black people at New Balance, the new collection features shades that draw inspiration from the tunics of the gospel choirs of the black community. Shoes and garments of the capsule are characterized by the writing ‘My Story Matters’, or ‘Their Story Matters’ for community advocates. The New Balance ambassadors, protagonists of the campaign are the actor, musician and activist Jaden Smith and the tennis phenomenon Coco Gauff. New Balance team athlete Kawhi Leonard will donate more than 12,000 pairs of shoes Kawhi 1, to Soles4Souls, an organization that helps small business development in developing countries. In addition, New Balance is committed to supporting the Black Talent in Design & Fashion Fund, an initiative intended to finance young people of color studying to enter the fashion industry.

Puma

Puma celebrates Black History Month 2021 by highlighting the work of black leaders, partners and community organizations who continue to inspire and shape the future for new generations. Throughout the month of February, Puma will be alongside athletes, ambassadors and partners amplifying their voices and actions on various platforms in support of universal equality, justice and acceptance. Moreover, Puma has announced a multi-year partnership with the Black Fives Foundation, the non-profit organization, whose mission since 2002 is to research, preserve, display, teach and honor the pre-NBA history of African Americans in basketball. The partnership will include the launch of special collections of clothing and sneakers with vintage graphics and logos with the Foundation’s slogans, “Make History Now.”
