Movies 2021: here is the list of new releases

More than a movie billboard, the 2021 one in the hall looks like a puzzle that is always missing a few pieces. The dates are only indicative and the titles continue to be moved further and further, possibly from the summer onwards. In addition to the two perhaps most anticipated Italian titles, Freaks Out by Gabriele Mainetti and Diabolik with Luca Marinelli and Miriam Leone, the list of American blockbusters still on standby continues to grow. Inevitably, the smaller titles are swallowed up by these high-budget giants but at least one, hoping it arrives in March with us, is to be marked on the calendar, Promising young woman, with Carey Mulligan in a state of grace (and one step away from the Academy Award?).

Many stories, initially destined for the big screen, have been diverted to TV, especially on streaming platforms. Suffice it to say that Netflix has 71 original films in the pipeline in the next 12 months (here the complete list), to understand how the balances are changing.
Nothing, however, can replace the thrill of the lights that go out while silence reigns in the room and you have the feeling of being immersed in the story, of being part of it and sometimes of becoming unwitting protagonists.

Most of the upcoming 2021 movies – hopefully – are about family stories, sequels or prequels or reboots, with characters you already know and love you can’t wait to learn more about.
Here are the 10 unmissable ones and when they should also appear in Italy.

Daniel Craig in No time to die

1. 007. No time to die

The latest film with Daniel Craig in the role of James Bond was again postponed to October 8, which, perhaps, will close the circle with No time to die. Partly shot in Basilicata, it should have had a premiere with the cast in Matera. Fans, meanwhile, still hope for it, but in the meantime, they are betting on his heirs: among the names he stands out, not so surprisingly, Regè-Jean Page by Bridgerton.

2. The suicide squad – Suicide mission

The heroes of comics and fairy tales in expectation are many, both in the Marvel universe with Black Widow (in the century Scarlet Johansson, coming May 7) and DC Comics, particularly with the super villains in the second chapter of Suicide squad, in theaters on August 4th. Among them the villain Harley Quinn, masterfully played by Margot Robbie (in the meantime, we find her the absolute protagonist of Bird of Prey, arriving on February 11 in Warner limited edition home video, in comic art steelbook 4k ultra HD version). And the world of fairy tales? The next Cinderella (with Camila Cabello and Billy Porter, scheduled for July 16) is anticipated by the villain of La carica dei 101, that is Cruella (with Emma Stone, on May 26).

3. Mission impossible 7

2021 is the year of the return of Tom Cruise in two of his most successful sagas, such as Mission Impossible 7, also filmed recently between Rome and Venice, scheduled for release on November 19 and Maverick top gun, which brings him back on 1 July to speed, fearless, in the skies.

4. Minions 2 – How Gru became very bad

The most messy yellow assistants in the animated world return to the cinema on July 2 with a real back story about the first meeting with the (not really) very bad Gru. They are all children and almost innocent, but together they become a real unbeatable team, at least as far as trouble is concerned!

5. Space Jam: A new legacy

The Looney Tunes led by Bug Bunny return to the basketball court more united than ever, on July 16th. After the galactic basketball game alongside Michael Jordan, this time they sign LeBron James. Once again the wacky Warner characters are in danger and a real champion is needed to save them …

6. Dunes

A new transposition of Frank Herbert’s novel hits theaters on October 1st. The other adaptations, including that of David Lynch, lead to this blockbuster chapter by Denis Villeneuve, with music by Hans Zimmer and a stellar cast that also includes Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac and Javier Bardem. Futuristic settings, space scenarios and a mysterious ancestral struggle… but this is only the beginning.

7. West Side Story

When Steven Spielberg puts his hand to one of the most poignant stories in the cinema (coming December 10) sparks are to be expected, especially with a young protagonist of the caliber of Ansel Elgort. We are in the 1950s and the two boys, Tony and Maria, fall in love despite being part of rival gangs. Only a sacred monster can touch a masterpiece.

8. Nightmare Alley

Cate Blanchett and Bradley Cooper are the stars of the thriller by Guillermo del Toro based on the bestseller of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham. Coming on December 3, it hits a high rate of danger because both are dangerous and mysterious characters, always on the edge. In the cast also all star Rooney Mara and Willem Dafoe.

9. The french dispatch

The new project of Wes Anderson, still undated, turns to the editorial office of a US magazine in a fictional city in France. Three different stories are intertwined in the 20th century with the center Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray and Timothée Chalamet. The film, it is rumored, aims to make it to the Cannes Film Festival.

10. The promising young woman

The directorial debut of Emerald Fennell (Camilla in The Crown 4), also involved as a screenwriter and producer, you see Carey Mulligan at the center of a drama about gender-based violence. Coming March 11, this intimate and unpredictable tale is about a young woman, Cassie, who puts herself in danger as a non-violent executioner.
