Thom Browne presents his first children’s collection

six illuminated benches …

in perfect order …

another day begins …

typewriter, book, apple …

everything in its place …

and the keys strike tac, tac, tac …

Thom Browne is an alchemist of worlds who unites apparently irreconcilable paradigms in a single garment, a skill that today puts at the service of childrenswear creating his first child collection. Transgenerational interpretation of clothing, each creation is intended as a physical and conceptual miniature of the adult version, a reverse lens that frames the same subject from different perspectives. Entrusting the presentation to a visual project created by the artist and photographer Cass Bird, the collection is immortalized in a video and a series of shots in which the children are elven office scribblers, repeating letter hitters on Olivetti machines customized with the maison’s white lines.

we are on duty,

pleasure first and never duty …

milk, apple, milk, apple …

send the memo, close the contract …

The parallelism with the ready-to-wear, with symptomatic elements of the Thom Browne style. There is the Super 120s gray suit in wool twill, the gender fluid ripstop vest, a Chesterfield coat with a velvet collar, the inevitable classic knitwear and the white Oxford shirt, the textures that a son embraces at every father’s outing before work. There’s the Super 120s navy sport coat in twill with gold buttons and the college shirt with a round collar and grosgrain armband, the “Friday uniform” which is the last day of school as much as a coveted prelude to the weekend of sofas. The mignon wardrobe of the sweatshirts ends with the four stripes in bouclĂ© jersey and reinterpretations of the traditional down jackets.

come back, come back …

oh, my head is spinning …

we still have to do, but we have … more and more … sleep …

The color scheme of one greyscale paints this picture at times ironic but at the same time wisely truthful in which the child is an adult in the making, it is the man or woman of the future who anticipates Saturday night beers with milk and chocolate drunk, which vents an archetypal frustration and nameless on the letters of a keyboard, fighting sleepiness at the sound of a bell that is an ageless pause, whose sense of liberation is among the first feelings to arise upon entering the world. Ready to dress small ambitions by wearing the first steps of life’s adventure in lace-ups, the childrenswear Thom Browne is couture made a child.

aah, nap time …

another day at the office …

or was it just a dream …
