On the fifth day of the Paris Fashion Week, when we almost got used to admiring the new men’s collections only digitally, we receive a special delivery from Loewe. On the occasion of the men’s fall winter 2021 and women’s prafall collection, the Spanish brand presents A Show in a Book, an invitation to explore the sources of inspiration of Jonathan Anderson. This year’s book (and the t-shirt we receive together as a gift) are a new edition of the original formats Show-in-a-box is Show-on-the-wall that Jonathan Anderson created for the previous Loewe collections in response to the unprecedented period we are experiencing.
A Show in a Book consists of an unpublished bound volume of 200 pages dedicated to the graphic works of the artist and writer Joe Brainard (1942-1994), author of the great classic I Remember (1975). The publication collects rare works of art, cartoons, papers and printed materials that Brainard created between the 60s and 70s, with a preface written by the poet Ron Padgett, and an essay by the art critic Éric Troncy.
In Jonathan Anderson’s preface, the designer writes: ‘I was struck by Joe Brainard’s artistic production, especially his collages, as well as his ability to make out of the ordinary creations. As an artist, writer, illustrator and poet, his thought and his work lie outside all rules and patterns. In his production stands out a lightness and immediacy that I find absolutely appropriate not only for the current period, but also in all circumstances. For me this volume is a sort of ‘Show in a book’, the catalog of an exhibition that has not yet taken place, as well as a manifesto that inspired the Loewe collections.‘
Curated and made by M / M (Paris), the book is wrapped in a fabric cover that reproduces the collage work Untitled (Bow) by Brainard, from 1967. Inside the elaborate folds of the cover, two brochures printed on tracing paper are sewn, revealing the Loewe novelties presented at Paris Fashion Week.
Starting from June 2021, with the arrival of the collections in boutiques, the publication will be distributed by Printed Matter as a separate volume and all proceeds will be donated to Printed Matter and Visual AIDS. Visual AIDS is an organization that uses art in the fight against HIV / AIDS, supporting artists with HIV and preserving their legacy, because AIDS still exists. Printed Matter is the leading international non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, dissemination and enhancement of art literature, and supports a community of thousands of independent artists and publishers from around the world.
A monogrammed strap joins the volume to a box with the words A Show on a Shirt, containing an oversized T-shirt on which the new Eye / LOEWE / Nature collection is reproduced, worn by the actors Omar Ayuso and Stéphane Bak. For the first time, on the occasion of Paris Fashion Week, the men’s and Eye / LOEWE / Nature collections are presented together to offer a complete vision of the Loewe male universe characterized by an environmentalist sensitivity and an openness to the outside world and nature.
