You are looking for something that fills the void left by The Queen of Chess? Bridgerton, the new series of Netflix created by Chris Van Dusen is exactly what you need. Based on the novels by Julia Quinn and produced by Shonda Rhimes, this costume drama set in the days of the English Regency tells the story of Daphne Bridgerton (played by Phoebe Dynevor) and others novices as they enter society.

Over its eight episodes, Bridgerton Talks about love, marriage, rivalry, gossip and social class, but it does so by challenging the conventions of the genre to which it belongs by offering plots with queer implications and a diverse cast. But it is also a real feast for the eyes thanks to costumes pompous and wigs flashy (so much so as to touch an aesthetic camp), with characters literally covered with pearls, feathers and crystals.

Hereinafter, the make-up & hair designer Marc Pilcher and connects it Claire Matthews tell us about the beauty looks of the series and how to recreate them.

How long have you been working for film and television?

Marc Pilcher: “From 1988. I worked for 15 years in West End theaters, then I moved on to film and television. A friend of a friend needed a good hairdresser who was familiar with wigs for a television movie in Romania – I left and it was a great experience. I liked it so much that, every time I talk about that movie, many memories come to my mind. That experience made me realize that what I wanted was to continue working on a movie set“.

Claire Matthews: “I’ve been working on it since 1988 and, like Marc, I too started with theater. We both attended the London College of Fashion. Then I got a job as a junior make-up artist for ITV and this has been my profession ever since ”.

Where do you start from when you’re working on a costume drama like Bridgerton?

Marc: “I start doing research on vintage paintings and books then I love to add my personal touch by bringing influences from other periods or from Hollywood’s golden age movies. I have a huge collection from which I draw inspiration that I am going to combine with historical details to create the right look.

“The style of the era of the English Regency (Regency) refers to the forms ofAncient Greece. Then, in Great Britain, it re-emerges in the 1980s against the backdrop of the scene New Romantic. And I’m sure we’ll see more revivals in the future, with splendid ones silhouette classic for women, the tuft for men and that type of use of makeup “.

One of the most interesting aspects of the series is its diverse and representative cast. How did it affect your approach to creating the look?

Marc: “From a design point of view it was simply fantastic. When I did research on the Queen Charlotte and I discovered that she had African origins, I immediately realized that I had a greater range of possibilities in creating her beautiful looks. I used silhouette of the period so that they celebrated its roots, including typically African curls, braids and hairstyles. Its huge Afro hair take the form of a Gainsborough-style wig but are also inspired by Beyoncé as Foxxy Cleopatra in Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002). “

How important is the physical aspect of its characters to the storytelling of a series?

Claire: “This is the most important aspect. The background of the character, and his story, help to define and characterize him. I really enjoy working with the actors during the early stages of creating the role, collaborating together and exchanging opinions so that they are at ease and satisfied with their appearance when they come out of the camper used for make-up and wigs “.

Speaking of hair, we have noticed many shades, from wigs to accessories, from fringes to hairstyles.

Was there a particular message you wanted to communicate through the language of hair?

Marc: “I always try to understand how can I represent the character of a character through hair and makeup. For example, to reflect the pragmatic attitude of Eloise, a free thinker and feminist, I decided to make her the mullet, a hairstyle in vogue during the Regency period.

“At the first costume fitting of Lady Featherington, I noticed that in his outfit there was a strong 50s component, so instead of opting for blatantly Regency hair and makeup, I relied on photos by [star di Hollywood come] Elizabeth Taylor and Deborah Kerr, which led me to pair a 50s look to one silhouette typical of the Regency. The character of Cressida, on the other hand, was based on Nellie Oleson’s The house on the prairie: very sweet, all curls, bows and flowers. And then ribbons and pearls. Angelic outside, cruel inside. “.

How is the inspiration for makeup born? It is an almost contemporary make-up.

Claire: “I’m a make-up artist and I’m part of Marc’s team, so I listen to his directions and the I interpret based on the actor in front of me. Of course, it’s always Marc who approves of the final result but, on the actresses I’ve made up for Bridgerton, I used products that made theirs brighter skin and radiant than ever. We had been given artistic license, so it was allowed to use illuminating products. In a production with rigorous historical fidelity, we probably wouldn’t have been able to ”.

What advice would you give to recreate a beauty look à la Bridgerton?

Claire: “Use a light foundation or one tinted moisturizer (Laura Mercier, Clarins, Bobbi Brown, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation) it’s a illuminating (Shiseido), applying a cream color just below the cheekbones and jaw. Then add a pink cream blush (Laura Mercier La Palette Naturelle Face and Cheek Palette) on the cheeks and a very light powder for fix makeup (By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra Foundation).

“For the eyes, I used a color greige or natural for the orbit area and a lighter illuminating tone on the eyelids and under the arches (Viseart Neutral Mattes Eyeshadow Palette, Laura Mercier Parisian Nudes Eyeshadow Palette). Opt for a natural eyeliner by choosing a liquid or black-brown gel version or black then use a brush with an angled tip to blend the effect (Louise Young LY31).

“To draw the eyebrows, I used a liquid delineator and a brush to rearrange them and soften the shape. (L’Oréal Paris Brow Artist Micro Tattoo 24hr Eyebrow Definer, Laura Mercier Sketch and Intensify Pomade and Powder Brow Duo).

“For the mouth, I chose one natural pencil to match the color of the actress’s lips (Laura Mercier Longwear Lip Liner, MAC Lip Pencil) that I paired or a natural lipstick of the same shade (Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm, Pixi Sheer Cheek Gel) or even just a simple one lip stick (Carmex, Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy, Burt’s Bees).

“And for the queen, I opted for a matte liquid lipstick when the lips were brighter (Smashbox Always On Liquid Lip Set) but without defining the outline as I didn’t want them to appear too perfect “.
