If you want to use theastrology to bring some positive energy to the new year, then the search for birthstones could be a good starting point. As a person who has religiously looked to the stars to find answers (hence my career as an astrologer), I have always had the fear that a gem could denote the traits of one’s personality. And so began my lifelong relationship with gems and crystals.

What is a birthstone and what does it mean?

Experts believe that the concept of birthstones dates back to biblical times. It is said that as early as the first century the Roman-Jewish historian Joseph discovered a connection between the 12 stones of the breastplate of the high priest Aaron, the zodiac signs and the months of the year. The custom of wearing these stones originated around the 16th century in Poland, where it was fashionable to wear a different one every month.

Until 1870, when Tiffany & Co. published a booklet that paired each month of the calendar with a stone as a gift idea for loved ones. In the following century, the American National Association of Jewelers it met in 1912 and 1952 to cement and complete the list of stones that correspond to each month. In this sense, wearing your own personal birthstone is a fairly new look.

How do birthstones work?

Birthstones are more than just gems that correspond to each month. Each of them has a healing property that is identified with the signs of the zodiac. They can also be used to charge water (for drinking and bathing), as well as to detoxify the skin. Basically, they can do anything related to self-care, self-love and healing; for this reason it is so important to know their energetic properties.
